Zoom service restored after outage affects thousands

(NEXSTAR) – Thousands of Zoom users reported issues accessing virtual meetings Wednesday, with the outage striking as many Americans were working or attending class.

A spike in reports started just after 11:25 a.m. PDT, according to Down Detector, and surpassed 44,000 a half hour later.

As of 11:55 a.m. PDT Zoom’s official website showed a “bad gateway” error for some users.

Zoom wrote on its service page at 12:17 PDT: “We are investigating domain name resolution issues on the zoom.us domain that is affecting multiple services. Regular updates will be provided.”

In an auto-generated email from its support team, Zoom said at 1:16 p.m. that services were starting to recover.

“If you are still unable to connect please flush your DNS cache and reattempt and you should be able to connect.”

The outage prompted a flood of memes from students and employees that ranged from frustration to celebration.

Zoom wasn’t the only major company to have problems Wednesday.

The popular online music and podcast platform Spotify had a similar spike in issues earlier in the day.

“We are aware of the outage and working to resolve it as soon as possible,” Spotify said, denying that there was a security hack.

Spotify announced shortly after 9 a.m. PDT that the issue had been solved, but declined to give any details about the cause of the outage.
