Senate GOP set to vote on Mitch McConnell’s replacement

(NewsNation) — Senate Republicans will elect a new leader to replace Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, stepping aside after 17 years at the top of the Senate GOP.

Three candidates are vying to replace McConnell: South Dakota Sen. John Thune, Texas Sen. John Cornyn and Florida Sen. Rick Scott.

The race will largely come down to who will do the most to achieve President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda.

Donald Trump’s new administration: Who has he chosen so far?

Trump is expected to meet with Republican leaders on Capitol Hill on Wednesday before meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House.

It’s unclear if the incoming president has a favorite for Senate majority leader.

While Thune — currently the No. 2 Republican in the Senate —  would appear to be the favorite in the race, staunch Trump ally Scott seems to be the front-runner.

Scott — the most aggressively reform-minded candidate — has received endorsements from several MAGA figures, including Elon Musk, Tucker Carlson and Florida Republican Congressman Byron Donalds.

Utah Sen. Mike Lee endorsed Scott on Tuesday, saying he believes Scott is the most closely aligned with Trump’s priorities.

Scott has said he’d push the Trump agenda through Congress, including plans to allow the president-elect to make recess appointments to his cabinet. That would allow Trump to add members to his administration without Senate confirmation.

The secret ballot vote is expected at 9:30 a.m. ET.
