Ayesha Curry’s Oakland shop to close citing safety concerns

(KRON) — Ayesha Curry’s shop in downtown Oakland, Sweet July, is set to close its doors in February due to safety concerns, according to the company.

The sudden shuttering of the Oakland store and cafe, located at 455 23rd Street, was announced “in order to prioritize the safety of our patrons and staff,” a post to social media said on Saturday.

The boutique shop was opened in 2021 and features products from Black-owned businesses as well as local Bay Area makers. The Sweet July website described the business as a “love letter from our founder, Ayesha Curry, to the town that has embraced and supported her.”

“We have loved being a part of Oakland and are grateful for the community that has opened their arms and embraced us,” the social media announcement of its closure said. “It has been an honor to serve you.”

While the business said it was a “difficult decision” to close the Oakland store, the post teased “exciting new ventures on the horizon.”

Sweet July’s last day of business in downtown Oakland will be on Sunday, Feb. 9.
