Cecile Richards, former Planned Parenthood president, dies: Reports

(NewsNation) — Cecile Richards, who led Planned Parenthood for 12 years, has died at the age of 67, according to multiple reports.

Under her leadership, the organization gained in membership, donor support and political clout but found itself in constant conflict with social conservatives for its role as the leading abortion provider in the U.S.

Planned Parenthood said Richards helped grow its base of supporters from 3 million to 11 million and helped build its donor base to its largest ever. She oversaw a notable expansion of services to LGBT people, including sharp increases in HIV testing and the provision of hormone therapy for transgender patients.

Richards was the daughter of former Texas Gov. Ann Richards. Before joining Planned Parenthood, she was a union organizer and deputy chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi.

President Joe Biden awarded Richards the Medal of Freedom — the highest U.S. civilian award alongside the Congressional Gold Medal — in November. He mourned her passing Monday in a statement.

“She fought for the dignity of workers, defended and advanced women’s reproductive rights and equality, and mobilized our fellow Americans to exercise their power to vote. She was a leader of utmost character and I know that her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” it read in part.

Vice President Kamala Harris also reflected on her relationship with Richards.

“I have known Cecile for decades and have stood shoulder to shoulder with her in many battles. What I know to be true is that in this moment, she would want us to honor her by rededicating ourselves to the fight for fundamental freedoms. Let us roll up our sleeves and make her proud,” a statement read in part.
